Rocked up to a scene full of musicians and sound designers, who had practically turned the front of the massive into a recording studio. Every time they join a jam I am pleasantly surprised by how much the mood improves.

The theme was connections.
The idea focused around identifing notes and chords, by jumping around a web as a cute spider trying to catch prey.
It was far more complex at first involving the circle of fifths, and while that was where our thoughts circled, we had to make some calls to simplify this version.
By the end of the jam we had implemented a parallaxing background, a playable, animated spider character that could run up and down the web, which had our 12 different musical scales running up the 12 web strings (our circle of fifths), and as the spider runs over them it plays each of the chords in the scale.
We didn’t get to complete the full game loop, but we did end up with a spider piano!
Techniques#
- Phantom cam
- Parallax layers (web, foreground, background)
- Character controller (Just a basic 8 direction controller)
- Animated spider and a mosquito sprite and prey paths
- Audio and sfx!
