The next thing I wanted to practice were my tilemap layers, specifically terrains. I was so tired of drawing maps manually or not understanding how peering bits work.
I sat down and took a more complete set of sprite sheets from Cup Nooble and took my time in figuring it out by looking at the assets they provided and the bitmap mask for suggested peering bits.
This took a ridiculous amount of time for me compared to other concepts! I can finally say I think I have a handle on it after a few weeks of sporadic trying and a deep dive.

You have to paint a mask on everything BUT the edges or corners that touch each other. (I’ve made so many kinds of masks before, why did this feel so different?)

If done correctly (aka spend a long time clicking lots of little blocks), you can pick a terrain and just paint your map 🥲
